Facts About Babies Most People Don’t Know

Almost everybody understands that babies are sweet and cuddly. They wear adorable and funny looking clothing. At what other stage in life can a person wear a t-shirt that says "Daddy's Princess" without getting funny looks? Most people think that there isn't much to being a baby. The majority of the population seems to think that babies are fully formed adults except for their inability to speak in complete sentences. Babies are actually quite complicated and have very distinct needs and very unique abilities. Here are some facts about babies that might be new to you.

Babies are not skilled at telling the difference between most of the colors they see. Babies are born with eyes that are not completely finished yet and only partially formed synapses between the eyes and the brain. Babies see primary colors better than any other, which is why you should choose those colors for his nursery and toys. You should focus the color scheme for your baby on bright reds and blues and greens or even on black and white. Pastels tend to run together.

Think about it: how often are you able to eat your own feet as a grown up? All babies know how to hold their breath and how to swim when they are born. It won't be long before your baby forgets how to do these things. It is this instinct that makes some doctors believe water births are best. Apparently the transition from the womb to independent life is easier with a water birth because the babies have spent nine months "swimming" inside mommy's womb. These experts believe that the water helps them smooth the way from being a totally depended fetus to being an independent baby much better than a regular hospital birth.

Did you know, though, that decibel levels are just as important while the baby is in the womb as it is once the baby is born? You can hurt a baby's ears even before he is born! The loudest sound your infant should be subjected to (inside the womb or outside of it) is the household vacuum cleaner. Vacuum cleaners usually push the limit of the baby's comfort level with noise, so it is a good idea to keep the music down and to avoid things like heavy construction and loud traffic. Everybody knows that babies use crying to communicate their need for service or attention but did you know that the baby does not cry real tears until he or she is almost a month old? Tears contain stress induced hormones.

In order to calm down when you are stressed, your body does everything it can to get rid of the hormones the stress has created-which is why you cry (your body is literally shedding the hormone). Your baby won't create this hormone until after you have given birth to him. The stress hormone does not usually start to show up until the baby has been out of the womb for at least a few weeks. Other babies can take a few months to begin producing tears when they cry. Babies are fascinating creatures. There is no real proof that states just how babies learn the things they do or how long it takes them to learn those things. One thing is for certain: babies change every day and watching them grow up is amazing.
