Question by : Can I wear a long black dress to a formal wedding where the bridesmaids are wearing black?
I'm going to a wedding as my boyfriend's guest. I know that the bridesmaids will be wearing black, and I was wondering if I could wear a long, black dress to this wedding? It's a "very formal" summer wedding. Is this totally inappropriate?

Answer by Sharon W
No. That is not good.
You should never wear black to a wedding, especially if the bridesmaids are wearing black.
You are not a bridesmaid, you are not attending a funeral, choose a different color.
You are dressing to attend a happy religious ceremony in which two people are pledging their lives together. Wearing black sends the wrong message.
Who on earth suggested black for the bridesmaids? I think that is a terrible choice.
Definitely do not play into that mistake by 'going along' with a poor choice.

What do you think? Answer below!

I don’t think it’s a good idea to wear black when the bridesmaids are wearing black, I wouldn’t anyway.

Yes, it would be totally inappropriate. There are two reasons. First, in general, guests must not wear black to a wedding. Second, when you know what color the bridal party is wearing, you avoid it.

Wear a nice bright summer color and enjoy yourself.

Are you sure it’s a wedding? It sounds like a funeral to me.

  6. idiotsgetinfree

Wow, you really want to piss the bride off, don’t you? Aside from that, no, it would not be appropriate, even if the bridesmaids weren’t wearing black.

black is totally inappropriate for a dress. Unless if you’re in a funeral its fine but for a wedding? c’mon white is the proper formal wear.
